3 Ways to hand dye Paper

Hand Dyeing Paper is one of my most favourite things- ever. Not only does no two pieces of paper come out the same but it’s also completely therapeutic - getting lost in the colours, the patterns, seeing how you can make the colours you want.

When I started dyeing paper I got lost in the beauty and felt really calm. I hope you enjoy it too!

There are 3 ways that I use to dye paper - the first is to use water colour inks. I particularly love Ecoline Watercolour Ink the quality is amazing and they last ages because you don’t need huge amounts of ink!

The second way is to use natural dyes such as flowers, avocado pips and onion skins. You can get anything from yellows and mustards to pinks and purples. It’s really amazing what works and what doesn’t and it is a case of trying things out. An easy one to start with is mixing turmeric with water until you get an ink consistency and then seeing how it works with the paper.

The third way is to use food dye. Either food gel or food colouring liquid works. A cheap alternative that can be found in supermarkets and works really well.
