Golden Mile Hawker Centre
We're staying on Beach Road in Singapore for our first month, a serviced apartment with one pan, one pot, one knife - you get the idea(!) so having the Golden Mile Hawker centre 10minutes walk away is a life saver. We have been desperate to try laksa and thankfully hit upon THE laksa spot in this area. Chung Cheng is the name of the Laksa stand that you want, on the 1st floor round the back facing away from downtown. It's smooth and creamy, with just enough spice to make you cough occasionally but not so much that you can't eat it! We've been back several times, get there early as they close at 6.30pm and we've had to eat other goods which haven't been as nice (clay pot rice, nasi goring etc!)
After our first meal there, of course I got excited and wanted to try everything so above is Grass jelly - a local delicacy eaten with sugar syrup and ice which is supposed to cool you down and of course, the classic, sugarcane juice. Id recommend always asking for it with lime in to cut how sugary it is!
