Cherry + Pear Pies

Cherry + Pear Pies

I'm getting really tired for leafy greens and all the other stuff I've been eating over the last while. I 'm trying to get as much naturally sourced vitamins into my body to help conceive and for the most part I really don't mind. My sugar cravings have completely gone which is amazing, but sometimes I want a little indulgence.

These pies are super easy to make and also provide a whole bunch of vitamins and minerals that are needed at the moment to get a healthy and happy conception.

Cherries - these little nuggets of ruby are one of my all time favourite thing. The trick to getting them dark and yet still not squidgy is always a mission, but one I'm willing for.

Right now trying for a baby has me feeling that everything in my life needs a spring clean and cherries are the natural way to do that for your body. They work as a bad buster cutting infections and general cleaning machine. They are also an amazing source of Vitamin C. I currently am taking a Vitamin C supplement, one that is made with Ascorbic acid rather than Citric Acid. Most Vit C supplements are based on citric acid and you should check whether that's what you prefer as there's a big difference between Citric and Ascorbic. Citric isn't actually a vitamin or nutrient at all, it's just something that reduces the acidity in our bodies whereas Ascorbic is actually the vitamin/nutrient of Vitamin C. Yes, I know and I feel your pain. It's a bloody minefield out there!

Pears - I'm currently on a massive pear and apple binge. I'm loving the mini kids apples from one of the big supermarkets here in Ireland that are so handy to have in my bag and munch on throughout the day. I'm a sucker for harder fruits - not loving anything that's mushy. Yuck.

Not only are pears rich in alkaline elements but they also contain Iodine! YAY. Iodine is one of the most underrated minerals and it actually is one of the most powerful because it is totally intertwined with our thyroid and maintains a healthy function. Goop recently did an article on Iodine and while some of things mentioned I don't agree with, I do agree that it's a vital mineral to take. I've noticed a huge difference in myself since taking it.

1 pack of shortcrust pastry or use my recipe here

2 cups of cherries, halved and stoned

2 pears, chopped with skin on

1 egg/a little milk for brushing

sprinkle of sugar

Pre-heat oven to 180C

In a pan with a splash of water, cook the cherries and the pears down till they are soft and mushy! I don't add any sugar/sweetners in as I feel this mix is sweet enough. You may want to and that's your choice!

While that is cooking down, roll out your pastry and cut into shapes. I used circles, but squares/rectangles/triangles would work equally well.

Once cut out add a spoonful of cherry/pear mix to the middle. I didn't wait until it had cooled but the more sensible people probably will! Place a circle over the top and use a fork to crimp the edges. Brush with egg/milk and sprinkle some sugar on. Cut an 'x' on the top to let the steam out. Cook till golden brown, I think it was about 15/20minutes.
